Untitled Short Story: Living Underwater

Ella looked around her shabby apartment, having just gotten home from work. She took off her oxygen mask and wetsuit, hanging them up to dry. She was still so grateful for the mayor of the city draining water out of this area to give her this space to live in. It wasn’t much, but something was better than nothing.
Ella was a refugee from land, specifically from Neo Elysium. She had decided to come and live in the underwater city of Serpentine Reef because she loved the ocean. Most of her art, which she was attempting to sell to make a profit, was of lovely seascapes. Back on land, she used to paint above water seascapes, but nowadays, since she was surrounded by gorgeous coral reefs and fish, that tended to be what she painted. She even procured herself an underwater camera to take photos so she could use them as references later. It had turned out to be very helpful.
Unfortunately for her, Ella was having trouble selling her art. Maybe it was because so many merpeople knew what the sea looked like already? Perhaps she should start painting things like fields and cityscapes. Hopefully those would sell better.
If only those things still existed peacefully on the surface, Ella thought with a cringe. Loving the ocean hadn’t been the only reason she had moved to Serpentine Reef; poor government and environmental crises had reduced many areas to rubble and abandoned buildings, not to mention burnt trees and bare ground, some from unchecked arson and some from wildfires that were left to burn out by themselves.
Needless to say, Ella decided to leave. However, she didn’t go with most of the refugee groups to a separate country. She had always been fascinated with the idea of living underwater; she had seen several movies and games about the possibility, and wanted to see it for herself. Luckily, there was an actual society underwater that she could live in: Serpentine Reef.
Everyone else around her thought she was crazy. “You won’t be able to live down there,” they said. “It wasn’t built for us!”
Ella didn’t care.
